Sorry, the bulk of all the fundraising that is done to elect a president is done during the primary season -- not necessarily during the first-in-the-nation NH primary but during the larger national primary campaign.
In fact, you'll notice that potential 2016 candidates were meeting with a lot of big donors even before they announced plans to run.
You also need to raise money during the primaries to receive federal matching funds -- money that comes from a $1 check-off on all tax returns.
