You raise $350 million

This is a respectable sum and in the recent past would have more than sufficed for a run for the highest office.

In 2004, George W. Bush raised $367 million and his opponent John Kerry raised $328 million.

But by 2008 and again in 2012, Barack Obama raised more than $700 million on his way to the White House, out-earning both John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.

We also know that outside spending on elections is playing an increasing role. If you look at what Democrats raised - both Obama and any PACs (Political Action Committees) working for his election -- and compare that against what Mitt Romney and other Republicans raised toward his candidacy, total spending in 2012 is estimated at:

$1.1 billion by Democrats and Barack Obama

$1.2 billion by Republicans and Mitt Romney

Go back and try again.

Go back to the beginning.
