Yemen state media: Prime minister resigns

The Associated Press

SANAA, Yemen (AP) Yemen's official news agency says Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Bassindwa has resigned following days of violence that left more than 140 dead and prompted thousands to flee their homes.

The agency gave no details and it was not immediately clear if his resignation has been accepted by the president.

The resignation follows heavy fighting Sunday around the Iman University, a bastion of Sunni hard-liners that is seen as a recruitment hub for militants.

Shiite rebels known as Hawthis took over the state television building following heavy clashes on Saturday.
