CONCORD – The top Democrat in New Hampshire’s state Senate says he looks “forward to working with” Republican Gov.-elect Chris Sununu.

But in an interview with NH1 News, state Senate minority leader Jeff Woodburn added that the Democratic caucus is “also going to be holding people accountable.”

The state senator from the North Country spoke with NH1 News on Thursday, minutes after the Democratic caucus chose Woodburn as the party’s leader in the chamber for the second straight term.

Democrats had hoped to reclaim the state Senate for the first time since they lost control in the 2010 election, but they failed. Depending on the results of a recount next week in District 7, the Republicans will keep their 14-10 majority, or will control the chamber by a 13-11 margin.

“It was a tough night for Democrats particularly as you moved down ballot,” Woodburn said.

But he added that “you get up in this business. Some days you win, some days you lose. But you just get back to work.”

Woodburn said going forward, “we want to protect and preserve the progress that we’ve made, the bipartisan progress, and hope that this more conservative Senate will be able to support those initiatives that the previous Senate supported. That will be our number one focus.”

Sununu became the first Republican to win election as governor in 14 years.

Woodburn said “I know him and look forward to working with him. I think he’s a good young personality, someone who will share a lot of similar approaches to government. He seems reasonable, willing to work with folks, and we’re going to extend the opportunity to work together and we’re also going to be holding people accountable.”
