Woman found dead in White Mountains after disappearing during hike

BETHLEHEM - The body believed to be of a missing hiker was recovered Friday about 2 miles from the trail head.

N.H. Fish and Game officials said the body believed to be of Claire Cocuzzo, 64 of Westwood, Mass., was found in the Gale River.

Officials also said they believe she might have disappeared a week earlier than originally thought.

A friend told NH1 News that worries began when she didn't show up for work on Monday.

Cocuzzo had planned to hike from Oct. 5 through Oct. 10, 2015, starting from the Mount Garfield trailhead to Bond Cliff and back, a roughly 26 mile hike.

She was reported missing when she did not return as planned.

Search teams were been deployed on the ground and a helicopter was used to fly over the area.

Cocuzzo's car was found Thursday on Gale River Road.

Stay tuned for more details on this story as they become available.
