Woman dies after being hit by Amtrak Downeaster in Durham

NH1 News

DURHAM - A female has died after being hit by an Amtrak Downeaster train in Durham Wednesday night.

The accident happened just before 8:30 p.m. on the railroad tracks between Durham and Newmarket. Durham Police and fire officials were on the scene, along with an Amtrak K-9 unit and State Police. Durham Police Chief David Kurz has ruled the woman's death a suicide.

"We're dealing with a suicide situation. We have not notified next of kin and we will be doing so once the ME clears the scene and we confirm a little bit more information. But I am capable of saying now that it is a suicide," he said.

This is the same area where a UNH student committed suicide involving an Amtrak three years ago. The Federal Railroad Administration has recorded a total of six fatalities involving Amtrak trains in New Hampshire in the last ten years.
