Windham student dies after falling out of fourth-floor window at UMass-Amherst

Police are investigating the death of a student from Windham who was attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst when he fell from a building on campus early Friday morning.

According to the Union Leader, James Tilley was a senior majoring in physics and had been class salutatorian at Windham High School when he graduated three years ago.

School officials say Tilley apparently fell from a fourth-floor window of the Hasbrouck Laboratory building shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. He died at the scene.

Police said the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The Massachusetts State Police and the Office of the Northwestern District Attorney of Massachusetts are also involved in the investigation.

Tilley was a member of the Commonwealth Honors College, which provides members with special opportunity for scholarship, living, research and other programs.
