Windham Cub Scouts win $5,000 in groceries, donate it to local pantry
WINDHAM - A Cub Scout troop shopping to stock shelves at a local pantry won $5,000 in groceries on an instant game in the store and included it in their donation.
Members of Windham Cub Scouts Den #1 Pack #263 were recently sorting groceries and produce at Shaw's Supermarket as part of a community service project for the Shepherd's Pantry, while one den mother shopped for more items. With the purchase, the troop received many of the store's "Monopoly" tickets, but too many to open at the time the boys were in the store.
Later, the den mother opened the tickets and discovered one winner for $5,000 in groceries at Shaw's. The troop donated the winning ticket to the pantry.
"Our shelves will be full for a long time with the groceries we can buy with $5,000," said the pantry on its website. "Thank you Cub Scouts for your kindness, generosity, and selflessness. You set a wonderful example for all of us."
