CONCORD - After a week-long trial, a jury has found William Shine guilty of child sex trafficking for trying to sell a 14-year-old for sex.
Shine, of Franklin, has been on trial all this week in Merrimack County Superior Court on charges he and his wife had shopped around to get money in exchange for sex with the girl.
It took the jury less than an hour to decide that Shine was guilty of all four charges against him including human trafficking, conspiracy to commit human trafficking, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Shine was led away in handcuffs, and will be held on $100,000 bail. A sentencing date will be scheduled within the next month, according to the judge.
Anthony O'Hickey had testified earlier that he offered to work with police to try to protect the girl from his own father, who talked about buying her from Shine. O'Hickey says his father sexually abused him as a child.
Prosecutors say O'Hickey gave Shine and his wife $1,000 on Nov. 25, 2014 to take the girl to a hotel for sex.
They say the couple was desperate for money.
The defense claims they were considering an arranged marriage which they say isn't a crime under New Hampshire law.
It was brief, but the young teen also took the stand.
She was obviously shy and nervous, even crying when she had to identify Shine.
“Is this hard for you to talk about?" asked attorney David Rotman.
The girl replied, "Yes."
Rotman went on to ask, “Even before you met Mr. O’Hickey that summer time, do you remember the defendant talking about selling you for sex?”
The girl also replied, "Yes."
Shine's wife, Julie, faces similar charges. The couple will be tried separately on charges Shine raped two teens. She allegedly helped.
