Weight of snow on Madbury school roof causes evacuation

MADBURY - The weight of snow on the roof at Moharimet Elementary school caused a precautionary evacuation Tuesday.

Parents were notified by telephone and email around noon that their children would be evacuated by bus. The students were bussed to nearby Mast Way Elementary in Lee where they finished out the day.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Morse says everyone remained calm and the move happened smoothly.

Morse says the weight of the snow is a concern, they noticed some cracking in some areas of the building.

Contractors will be back to work removing snow from the roof Wednesday. The building will also be inspected to see if it's safe. If it's determined that it is not safe, Morse says they'll have to come up with a plan from there.

Moharimet students will have a day off Wednesday while the building is inspected.
