Website compares medical costs across NH hospitals and outpatient centers

CONCORD – There are websites that compare costs for almost everything you would need – cars, apartments, groceries – you name it.

There's also a website that can help you compare what could be some of the most expensive bills in your lifetime - medical costs. And the cost of a medical service or procedure can vary widely depending on where you go to have it done.

NHHealthCost.NH.Gov helps people search for the best price for a service or procedure by comparing the estimated cost at different facilities in the state of New Hampshire. The site uses data from insurance companies.

According to the website, without insurance knee surgery at a Southern NH Medical Center is estimated to cost $3,435. The website shows the same surgery at a Portsmouth Medical Center is estimated to cost just over $17,000. That's a nearly $14,000 difference in price.

If you have insurance, you can also use NH Health Cost to compare estimates of out-of-pocket costs based on your specific coverage.

The site lists dozens of procedures, and by the end of the year will include prescription drug prices, lab work, and dental costs.
