Water main floods trench in Boston, killing worker

BOSTON (AP) — Boston officials say a water main gave way in the city's South End neighborhood, flooding a trench and killing a worker.

Fire department spokesman Steve MacDonald tells The Associated Press a worker became trapped in the 20-foot-wide trench when the water main broke Friday afternoon. He says a recovery effort is continuing and it's not yet known if anyone else was in the trench.

Water has been shut off to the area.

McDonald had no immediate information on the identity of the person who died or what type of work was being done at the time.
