Warm weather brings sailors out for after-Christmas race on Squam Lakes

HOLDERNESS - Water lapping against a boat is not something you usually hear the day after Christmas on the Squam Lakes.

Normally, winter turns the open water into an ice rink. But this year, with temperatures reaching into the 60s, boaters are enjoying an extended season, including a group of sailors who organized a regatta Saturday.

"It's crazy," said Arthur Cunningham, of Bow. "This time a few years ago we were skating on the lake, not sailing."

Because of the mild winter Gus Whitcomb, a member of a local sailing club, gathered friends and family to hold a "Day after Christmas Regatta".

Four sailboats participated, with sailors getting into the holiday spirit dressing as Santa and elves.

An in keeping with the season of giving, the entry fee for the race was a donation of food to the Ashland Food For All, an organization that puts on weekly dinners.
