US, state officials want to hear from dairy farmers

The Associated Press

CONCORD (AP) — Amid a rash of dairy farm closures in New Hampshire, federal agriculture officials are teaming with their New Hampshire counterparts to hear from farmers about the challenges they face from a long-running drought and low milk prices.

Nineteen of the state's 120 dairies have closed in recent months, or nearly twice the number that went out of business over the previous four years combined.

Officials are hosting a forum for dairy farmers on Monday at the New Hampshire Audubon Society.

Epsom farmer Stewart Yeaton says he hopes to get answers about financial assistance. He's had three out of five wells go completely dry.
