Upstairs neighbors questioned after woman fatally shot

LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a Massachusetts woman was shot dead in her apartment and three people who were in the apartment above hers have been questioned.

Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for the Essex County district attorney, says 41-year-old Mirta Rivera was found with a gunshot wound in her abdomen in the apartment building on Exchange Street at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.

Monahan says three people who live above Rivera were questioned but they have not been charged in Rivera's death. They were arrested on unrelated charges.

She says the death is being treated as a homicide and there is no threat to the public.

Lawrence and state police are still investigating the motive and circumstances.
