UPDATE: Town launches investigation after Salem finance director arrested for shoplifting

SALEM - The town of Salem is investigating its finance director after she was arrested and accused of shoplifting.

Jane Savastano has been an employee for the town of Salem for more than a decade.

"Very out of character," Salem's Town Manager Leon Goodwin said. "I have worked with her for over two years, and it's not something I would ever expect".

Savastano was arrested on Friday and accused of stealing almost $600 worth of merchandise from the Macy's at the Rockingham Mall. Town officials couldn't comment if Savastano had issues with money in the past.

"It happened outside of work," Goodwin said. "We will be doing a full-out audit to make sure that nothing improper happened with town funds."

Savastano is currently on administrative leave.

"We take these chargers very seriously," Goodwin said. "We are going to do all we can to make sure that they can have confidence in everything we do going forward including who is our finance director."
