The emergency lane and the left-most lane opened back up around 1 p.m

Police said the accident happened when a white Nissan Sentra driven by Matthew Torbin, 23 of Derry, merged onto the highway at Exit 2, and crossed multiple lanes of traffic before hitting the tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer driven by John Pothier, of North Billerica, Mass. then jackknifed and slid on its side spilling oil out onto the road.

Both Pothier and Tobin were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is under investigation, and witnesses told police that it looked like Torbin may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
