UPDATE: Some Durham apartments approved for occupancy, easing move-in delays for some students
DURHAM - Certificates of occupancy were granted for several new off-campus apartments, a move that will ease an expected crunch for some students who chose off-campus housing this fall.
Nearly 200 tenants who will be living in brand new buildings managed by University Edge Apartments received a letter this week stating that move in dates were delayed.
"The original move in date of August 24, 2015 has been pushed back to August 28, 2015," the letter reads, adding that the delay may be tentative, pending the receipt of proper town permits.
Tenants were also told they would be offered "$100 per day up to at total of $400 for this inconvenience in the form of a Visa gift card or a credit to your monthly rent."
“Everybody will be in before classes begin," said University Edge's regional manager Kelly Lewton.
Friday afternoon, the town announced several buildings had been approved for occupancy, including 1 Madbury Road, 49 Main Street, 17 Madbury Road and 21 Madbury Road, both in Madbury Commons.
"Orion’s project on Main Street and Christy’s project on Jenkins Court will happen towards end of next week some time," said Thomas F. Johnson, director of zoning, building codes and health for the town.
Lewton told NH1 News that tenants have been very understanding and complaints have been minimal. She said the delay is due to ongoing inspections and permits at the project that has been underway since May 2014.
“We’ve selected a date that we know will fit when the project will be complete," she said. "So, August 28 – they will be in – either on the 28 or before.”
With just 11 days to go before fall classes start, being informed about a delayed move hasn't been pleasant news for tenants.
"It would definitely be frustrating," said UNH student Caley Prunier. “I think that maybe they should have figured out how long it was going to take for a more accurate date, because obviously a lot of people are depending on [that] housing.”
According to Durham town officials, 11 buildings are currently under construction in town - but few have been cleared to let residents inside.
"Two have received a temporary certificate of occupancy," said Administrator Todd Selig.
As of this afternoon, two of the largest project were still waiting for approval - including University Edge - and Madbury Commons.
Housing units at both projects are at maximum capacity and more than 700 people have already signed leases.
"Although it sounds nice to have that money back, it just seems like a lot of scrambling and a lot of stress to me. I know I’m stressed just moving in where I know everything is already ready," said student Molly McCoy.
According to Selig, brutal winter weather is to blame for many of the project delays.
Construction teams are working around the clock, and building inspectors are going to be working on Sunday to try and assist developers to ensure students can move in as soon as possible.
