ROCHESTER — Police arrested the artist of a mural containing the words "Black Lives Matter" and a backwards American flag on the wall of a Rochester underpass Thursday afternoon.
50-year-old Beth Wittenberg was taken into custody and charged with criminal mischief. She was released on $1,500 personal recognizance and is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 15 at 8 a.m.
The mural garnered mix reactions from residents.
Rochester police chief Gary Boudreau said that it didn't matter what message the mural contained, but the fact that it appeared on state property.
