UPDATE: Police stun, arrest Laconia man after assault, barricade situation

NH1.com

LACONIA - Police used a stun gun on a man who barricaded himself in his home, before arresting and filing several charges against him.

James Cunningham, 60, is charged with two separate domestic violence counts - felony second degree assault and misdemeanor simple assault. He also faces charges for criminal threatening and resisting arrest.

According to police, Cunningham threatened to kill a woman in his home and allegedly hit her over the head with pool cue, bringing about the felony assault charge.

The incident began as a possible hostage situation, when police received a call from Cunningham's residence at 223 Weirs Blvd. in Laconia. The call came from a female just before 8 a.m., who said she had been assaulted and wasn't allowed to leave the residence.

Shortly after, police were able to assist the victim out of the house through a rear window. However, Cunningham refused to leave.

"We set up a perimeter, and the Belknap County Special Operations group was subsequently called in," said Laconia Police Chief Chris Adams.

According to police, the victim also reported Cunningham had several weapons in the house, including a shotgun, knives, swords and other firearms.

"The [SWAT team was] able to negotiate with him and get him to come out of the residence where he was taken into custody," Adams said.

Initially, police said Cunningham was not complying with instructions, so they were forced to use a stun gun on him. He was not armed at the time and was arrested without incident.

Weirs Blvd. was reopened around 11 a.m. Tuesday, as police executed a search warrant at the home for additional evidence. The investigation is ongoing.

"At this point, we’re still trying to establish what the exact relationship is between the suspect and the victim," Adams said. "It’s unknown at this time, but I believe they were known to each other."

Cunningham refused bail and is being held at the Belknap County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
