UPDATE: Police say driver killed in crash with Secret Service was trying to pass other car

WAKEFIELD - Local and State Police are investigating the cause of a deadly two car crash involving Secret Service agents on Route 16 in Wakefield Tuesday night. Bruce Danforth, 45 was pronounced dead on scene.

His two female passengers and the four Secret Service agents were all taken to area hospitals.

According to police, it appears Danforth crossed the center line to pass another vehicle when he hit the car carrying the agents head-on. The agents were part of a protective detail working for the Hilary Clinton campaign.

Police say weather conditions and speed do not appear to be factors, and there's no evidence of improper driving from the agents.

It's unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning, but test results could take months.

Danforth was on probation, had a suspended license, and a lengthy criminal history.

He was arrested as recently as Dec. 2 for possession of an illegal Class A substance in Massachusetts.

According to a GoFundMe account set up to help the family with funeral costs, Danforth leaves behind his mother, siblings, five children, and seven grandchildren.

Clinton released a statement: "I was saddened and concerned to hear about the serious accident that occurred last night in New Hampshire in which four Secret Service agents were injured and a passenger in a second car killed. My husband and I send our prayers and condolences to all the victims and their families. We are grateful everyday for the service, dedication, and professionalism of the U.S. Secret Service."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police are looking to speak with anyone who was in the vehicle Danforth apparently tried to pass. Anyone with information about the crash can call state police officer Christopher Storm, (603) 223-8607 or email him at christopher.storm@dos.nh.gov.
