UPDATE: Police say Candia man confessed to lighting own house on fire and blamed bed bugs

CANDIA - A Candia man accused of arson has confessed that he poured gasoline in his house and then lit it on fire last week, police said.

According to the Union Leader, Stephen J. Gracyalny, 59 of Candia, confessed to the blaze at his residence of 36 Hook Rd. and told investigators that he and his wife, Donna, had been dealing with the bed bug infestation for about two weeks.

When police asked Gracyalny what happened, he said he started the fire because of the bed bugs and had used gasoline and a lighter to ignite it.

According to the paper, Gracyalny also claimed that his wife had “terrible bite marks all over her body from the bed bugs" and said "he was afraid that she would develop an infection and he just didn't want her to sleep in her bed anymore because of the infestation.”

Gracyalny owed $147,000 on the house along with insurance, was arraigned Monday, and remains held on $50,000 cash bail or corporate surety.
