DERRY — The annual spirit week at Pinkerton Academy is meant to unite students, but some students were offended by how others participated.
One student wore a confederate flag on “American Day” and another painted his face black on “Black Out Day.”
Arielle Robinson, a Pinkerton student posted her discontent on Facebook."There aren't many black students at Pinkerton, but despite that, it should be all of our jobs to call out all racism. I'm now a senior and I've faced anti-black racism all four years I have been here," Robinson said.
NH1 News spoke to several students, some were upset that the students actions may have been intentionally insulting, others said the situation was blown out of proportion.
“Pinkerton’s not like a very racist school. I don’t think that people really meant to do that but it should have been punished,” said senior Kaylah Perrault.
The headmaster of Pinkerton, Griffin Morse, said that the administration became aware of the students' behavior on Thursday and is talking with the alleged students. The school will continue to investigate the incidents, and the students could face possible suspension.
"As our school rules state and our administration adheres to strictly on behalf of the community, 'Pinkerton Academy will not tolerate written or verbal comments which insult or attack another person's race, religion, heritage, gender, disability or sexual preference. Students who make inappropriate, degrading and/or inflammatory slurs will be subject to immediate suspension,'" Morse said.
