UPDATE: Piano teacher on trial for sex assault dies after shooting himself outside NH court

BRENTWOOD - A New Hampshire defendant, on trial for multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor, has died after shooting himself outside the Rockingham County Courthouse in Brentwood Friday morning, the Rockingham County Sheriff's office confirmed.

Hours after the shooting, court officials said the jury could not reach a verdict in case - so the court declared a mistrial.

“One of the individuals came outside and saw the person on the ground," said Chris Neville, who works in the courthouse. "There were a lot of questions – everybody, I think, just felt a little on edge ... I understand his wife was in the ladies room when it happened and came out, so I kind of feel bad.”

Authorities said John Goodwin, 75, a longtime piano teacher in Atkinson, went on trial earlier this week on six counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault. Prosecutors said he repeatedly sexually assaulted a student who is now 24. Goodwin pleaded not guilty.

“We worked in partnership with the bailiffs that we manage as well as the deputies were here on scene," said Rockingham County Sgt. Chris Bashaw. "We provided the medical aid that we could on scene.”

Court officials said the jury was deliberating when Goodwin shot himself Friday morning.

Goodwin was flown to a Boston hospital, where he later died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting did not impact court proceedings.
