UPDATE: Mother, newborn safe after serious crash forces emergency delivery
DUNBARTON — A young family is counting its blessings after being involved in a serious crash just minutes away from home.
Kaitlin and Brad Fournier were driving with their daughter Bella to celebrate her birthday when another driver failed to stop at an intersection and crashed into them.
"I remember the impact, the car flipping over, the car coming to a stop," Kaitlin said.
Kaitlin - who was 37 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash - sustained a large cut to her leg, causing her to lose a lot of blood. Once she and her husband realized Bella wasn't hurt, they immediately turned their attention to their unborn child. Kaitlin couldn't feel the baby moving as paramedics searched for a heartbeat.
"He took his time and I was like, 'Oh no,' he then took off his scope, took a deep breath and said, 'I found it,' and we were like, 'Thank god,'" Kaitlin said.
Kaitlin was rushed to Concord Hospital for an emergency c-section and gave birth to a happy and healthy baby girl named Olivia. Kaitlin was then taken away for another surgery on her leg.
"It’s something you see in a movie; you never think it’s going to happen to you," Kaitlin said.
