The 65-year-old woman - who didn’t want to be identified - said she tried to enter her apartment complex when a man identified by police as 23-year-old Michael Bontaites rushed up to her and tried to grab her bag.

Police said Bontaites followed the woman from a gas station near her South Porter Street home, and after the confrontation, the woman feared for her life and pulled a gun on him.

“As he went for me – boom,” she told NH1 News on Tuesday night. “I mean it was that fast."

She shot him in the chest.

“It was just a knee-jerk reaction,” she said.

The woman has a valid concealed carry gun permit, and she said she has advice for people traveling alone in Manchester at night.

“I was... Oh my god, I never shook so much in my life,” she said. “You know it was awful. Carry protection - because you never know where or when, and obviously it can happen anywhere at anytime.”

Bontaites was charged with robbery and was arraigned at Elliot hospital Tuesday afternoon.
