UPDATE: Manchester hazmat situation turns to SWAT scene after firefighters threatened

MANCHESTER — Initial reports of a hazmat situation at a home escalated quickly to a SWAT scene Wednesday morning.

Police were called to 24 Krakow St. for what neighbors initially reported as a hazmat situation, but after fire Chief Daniel Goonan told NH1 News firefighters were threatened, police - and eventually a SWAT team - became involved.

Fire crews, police, SWAT, and animal control showed up in full force when a landlord made a wellness check on one of his tenants.

“We’ve called the police on him quite a few times," said Charlene Cappella, who lives in the same building as the suspect. "He threatens to kill people all the time.”

The landlord told NH1 News they smelt something in the apartment that concerned them and called the fire department.

Rosemary Rowell said police told her to “move and stay out of the way” for her safety. She said she's “uneasy especially having two kids" after the incident.

“He explained he was not going to be cooperative, made more threats, told us to go away, and indicating he had a fire arm," police Chief Nick Willard said.

SWAT used tear gas to get the suspect out of the apartment.

The man jumped out of his window, onto the bearcat before finally being taken into custody.

At this time, no name has been released, and it is unknown if he had a gun, or if anything else was recovered by hazmat teams.

The man could be facing charges.

“When an individual misbehaves like this, in such a threatening matter, it depletes the resources that cannot be used in other parts of the city," Willard said. "I’m inclined when those things happen to charge him criminally.”

Police remained on scene to investigate the apartment.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for a medical and mental evaluation.
