UPDATE: Man wanted in Massachusetts shooting reason for police activity in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH - One man is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after local police responded to a search for a shooting suspect in Massachusetts.

Portsmouth police closed down streets and evacuated America's Best Inn on Woodbury Avenue Friday afternoon as they tried to contact a man who was wanted in Cambridge, Mass.

Police said they were able to contact him by phone but he quickly ended the conversation. Shortly after, the man opened a window to his room but was met by police officers. He then went back into the room and a gunshot could be heard coming from the room, police said.

Police tried to contact him again but received no response. State Police used a robot to look in the room and found the man dead.

Cambridge police said the man may have been involved in a shooting on 5th Street on Friday morning. He also was wanted for multiple warrants out of Middlesex Superior Court, including assault to murder, assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon.

They are withholding his identity pending notification of next of kin.
