UPDATE: Human skull and bone fragments found in Dover likely decades old

DOVER- Dover Police are investigating after construction workers found human bone fragments at a site off of Dover Point Road on Tuesday.

Patty Barish, owner of Patty B’s restaurant said she was shocked and intrigued to hear human bones were found at the work site just steps away from her business.

“There’s got to be some kind of great story behind this, I mean it’s got to be historic,” Barish said.

Dover Police were back on the scene Wednesday, helping crews look for any additional fragments.

Construction workers described seeing what looked like a skull, and possibly a leg bone.

It’s early in the investigation, but police said the evidence points to these bones being very old.

“These are not contemporary, this is not going to be any sort of contemporary crime scene and that we’re looking at bones that are at least, at the very least, several decades old,” said Lt. Brant Dolleman.

Police believe the bones were found in sand that was brought to the site from a pit a few miles away on Mast Road.

Investigators say this has the potential to be a criminal or historic investigation, though the remains do not appear to match any known investigations.

“It’s certainly something that’s interesting and a good reminder of all the history that is around this part of the state and in the city in particular,” Lt. Dolleman said.

Dover police will continue to work with the State Medical Examiner’s Office as they work to determine the age and origin of the bone fragments.
