GOFFSTOWN - A Goffstown man who claims to have accidentally shot his brother in the head, said he and his brother were drinking "too much."
Timothy Beard allegedly shot his younger brother Christian Beard, 21 of Goffstown when they said they were hanging out with friends, playing video games and talking about zombies on Sunday afternoon. Timothy then allegedly picked up the gun and pointed it at his brother, when it then discharged.
Christian is recovering in a Boston hospital with life-threatening injuries while his brother sits in jail.
"On my own accord i can tell you that firearms do not go off accidentally," Chief Robert Browne of Goffstown Police said.
Police said the boys had been drinking and “messing around” with a gun at their Goffstown apartment, when Christian was shot in the head.
Court documents reveal the conversation at the scene, where police note that Timothy was visibly upset and emotional.
"How am I not under arrest I (explicative) shot my brother," Timothy said to police. "I didn’t think the thing was loaded."
"Guns are not toys," Chief Browne said. "You should treat every firearm like it’s loaded."
Timothy told an officer at the scene he and his brother had been drinking “too much” prior to the incident.
Another witness inside the apartment with the brothers said Timothy stated "when a zombie comes, hit him like this in the head" and then the gun went off, as if to mimic the video game they were playing.
"We’re hoping for the best for the victim," Chief Browne said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, but from a law enforcement end we're making sure there is justice for what happened to his brother."
Social media is exploding with remorse for the Beard family, with one brother fighting for his life and the other being held on a $10,000 bail.
