UPDATE: Gene Parker, who was hit by a car in his wheelchair, has died at Concord Hospital

CONCORD - A man who was hit in his wheelchair by a car on Interstate 393 on Thursday has died.

Concord Hospital confirmed that Gene Parker, 52, died Sunday.

He was in the road along I-393 because the adjacent sidewalk was unplowed. The woman who hit him has not been charged.

The accident angered local advocates concerned that Parker had no better way to get to the Friendly Kitchen on South Commercial Street, and that the unplowed sidewalk posed to hazard to others who use the route to get to the soup kitchen.

The I-393 sidewalk is state-owned, but the Department of Transportation does not plow sidewalks during the winter.

City officials say there is another path to the soup kitchen, albeit a much longer one.
