UPDATE: Fatal hit and run victim identified; car found

NEWMARKET - Police have located the black Volvo suspected of striking and killing a 79-year-old man walking on Grant Road on Thursday afternoon.

The elderly victim, identified as Charles Dearborn of Newmarket, died on scene.

Newmarket Police responded with NH State Police around 2:51 p.m. near the intersection of Ash Swamp Road and Grant Road, located about 2 miles from the center of downtown.

There was no sidewalk in the area that Dearborn was struck, authorities said.

Witnesses identified the car involved as a 'dark Volvo' that was operating "erratically" before the crash, according to police.

About an hour and a half after the pedestrian-involved collision, authorities received a medical call from a multi-unit complex at 241 South Main Street in Newmarket.

The caller reported an unconscious 45-year-old man on the front lawn.

The man was identified as Peter Wallace, 44, of Newmarket.

When officers arrived, they also found a black Volvo with front-end damage that appeared to match involvement with a hit-and-run.

Police said Wallace is the registered owner of the Volvo, although it is unclear if he was the driver at the time of the crash.

Wallace was transported to Exeter Hospital and is currently on life support following life threatening injuries, according to state police. On Thursday night, police were trying to determine what led up to those injuries.

Anyone who may have additional information is asked to contact Trooper Bryan Plamondon at 603-223-8677 or email at bryan.plamondon@dos.nh.gov.

The crash remains under investigation.
