UPDATE: Despite efforts of Derry firefighters, horse that was trapped in mud dies

DERRY - A horse that got trapped in the mud overnight has died despite the efforts of firefighters and a veterinarian to save its life.

Firefighters were called on Thursday morning to help the horse after the owner discovered it had fallen and become hypothermic after struggling unsuccessfully to get up out of the mud.

Fire crews used sheets of plywood to move the horse to solid ground. They helped the animal up and into a stall, but the horse collapsed again. Firefighters stayed with the animal and got instructions to care for the horse from a veterinarian over the phone until the vet was able to make it to the barn.

NH1's Jenna Abate was at the scene and will have the full story tonight at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.
