BEDFORD - A fire that started in an attic, spread through the roof and destroyed a Burleigh Terrace home Tuesday afternoon.
"The occupants were home at the time and upon arrival there was light smoke conditions from the attic area. Then we opened up the roof with pike poles and the fire just banked down on them, and it blew right out through the roof at that time," said Fire Chief Scott Wiggin
The New Hampshire Red Cross was assisting seven people who lived in the home, five adults and two children. One person was home, saw smoke in the house and called 911.
The four-alarm fire drew about 60 firefighters who battled the flames during the afternoon and continued to work well into the evening. With the nearest water hydrant about a mile away, the main challenge was getting water to the house. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
No one was injured, and Wiggin said the family was fortunate.
"It was in the middle of the day. They were up. They were alert. It's not like they were sleeping," he said.
The insurance company is expected to assess the damage first thing on Wednesday morning.
