UPDATE: 5 people taken to hospital, 40 cars involved in I-93 crashes

DERRY - First responders took five people to the hospital and evaluated six other crash victims during a chaotic morning commute that left 40 cars on the side of the road on Interstate 93 near the Windham/Derry townline.

According to the Derry Fire Department's communications center, roughly 50 calls were received reporting the pileup around 10:15 a.m. on I-93 southbound.

Ambulances responded from Londonderry, Manchester and Hooksett. Several patients were extricated and taken to Catholic Medical Center, Elliot Hospital and Parkland Medical Center. None of the injuries appeared serious. Several crash victims were examined at the scene but opted against transport to a hospital, Derry firefighters said

Salem and Windham first responders also were dealing with accidents along I-93 during the morning.

The incident stalled traffic on the highway for much of the morning and created problems for emergency responders to get to the individuals involved.

Firefighters blame the accidents on slippery roads and brief whiteout conditions Friday morning.
