UPDATE: 2 students arrested in UNH stabbing, one in court; case remains under investigation

DURHAM - Madbury Commons apartment complex at the University of New Hampshire was the site of a stabbing that put the whole campus on alert early Saturday morning.

UNH sent out alerts Saturday just before 1 a.m. for students to avoid the area of Madbury Road and be on the lookout for two suspects who stabbed a student.

According to court documents, UNH student Dean Skelley was stabbed twice and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"It's kind of surprising especially it being at night when a lot of people are out and around drinking having a good time," Adam Harrington, a UNH senior said. "It's just to get that kind of notification is kind of scary."

Matthew Gibbons, 20 of Salem was charged with first degree assault, and Eric Denning, 21 also from Salem was charged with second degree assault and criminal liability. Both were students at UNH.

Gibbons posted a $100,000 bail and Denning was arraigned Monday getting his bail reduced to a personal recognizance.

Denning's attorney argued that although he was involved in an altercation, he wasn't the one to do the stabbing, and said Denning was as a good student with an "uncharacteristic" night.

The motives for Friday night's stabbing are still unclear.
