UPDATE: 1 dead, 22 injured in Maine hayride accident
MECHANICAL FALLS, ME - A 17-year-old girl has died following a freak accident involving a hayride in Maine.
The girl has been identified as Cassidy Charette, of Oakland, who was with several others students from Messalonskee High School.
Two others are listed in critical condition. One of them is Connor Garland, 16, of Belgrade, who was with other high school students on the wagon, including Charette, police said.
Maine State Police say the hay wagon was being pulled by a Jeep that lost control, careened down a hill, struck a tree and overturned.
The driver of the Jeep - David Brown, 54, of South Paris - is also listed in critical condition and is being treated at CMMC in Lewiston, according to authorities.
15 people were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, while 7 others were taken to St. Mary's in Lewiston. One other person was transported to Maine Medical Center.
Investigators say a mechanical problem with the Jeep may have caused the driver to lose control and State Police say they will now conduct an inspection.
Fire Marshals are investigating the incident. They're responsible for licensing mechanical amusement rides in Maine, however the hay ride did not require such licensing.
