Unoccupied Somersworth home damaged in early morning fire

SOMERSWORTH - No one was injured in an early morning fire at 623 Sherwood Glen, but the unoccupied home was seriously damaged.

Firefighters say the call came in around 4:30 a.m. when neighbors saw smoke coming from the home. The first crew to arrive found heavy fire in one room and called for mutual aid, bringin Dover, Rochester and Berwick, Maine, firefighters to the scene.

Firefighters were able to contain the worst of the blaze to the bedroom where it started though the fire did spread into the roof in the living room. The structure did suffer heat and smoke damage throughout.

Firefighters say the fire was under control by 5 a.m. but that cold weather and a frozen hose and pump made fighting the fire more challenging.

The building is owned by Karen Long of Northwood and was unoccupied at the time of the fire, though her family's belongings were still inside the home at the time of the fire, firefighters said.

The cause remains under investigation.
