UNH Research: 1.4 million families spend 10 percent of income on child care

NH1.com

DURHAM — Nationwide almost 1.4 million families spend more than 10 percent of their income on child care, according to new research from the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire.

On average, 8.8 percent of family income is spent on young children, yet 27 percent of families spend more than 10 percent. Poorer families spend 20 percent of their income on child care, more than double the national average research found.

“This suggests a need for policies to address the affordability of child care for very low income families,” the researchers said.
