UNH greenhouses only ones in world to get top sustainability credential

DURHAM - The Macfarlane Research Greenhouses at the University of New Hampshire received a top grade for sustainability.

The facility, which is part of the NH Agricultural Experiment Station at the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, is the only research greenhouse operation in the world with this sustainability certification.

The program at the MPS Group of the Netherlands assesses energy, water, and fertilizer use; crop protection methods; and waste management in greenhouses around the globe. MPS Group operates in more than 55 countries and works with about 4,000 growers.

The Macfarlane Research Greenhouses were given a grade A certification for the second year since UNH began participating in the program in October 2012.

With about 20,000 square feet of greenhouse space, the facility has about 20 ongoing research projects.
