UNH aids in making guide to getting mental health, substance abuse care coverage

DURHAM — A guide created in part by UNH helps to educate people on how to access coverage for substance abuse and mental health treatment.

The UNH School of Law, UNH's Institute for Health Policy and Practices and the nonprofit New Futures teamed up to create the guide.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act passed in 2008 ensures that treatment limitations and financial requirements for mental health and substance use issues are no more restrictive than the standard limitations for standard medical and surgical benefits, According to the U.S. Department of Labor.

This act gives consumers certain rights that can help them pay for treatment. The guide answers questions about these rights and the coverage available.

The guide was made possible through support of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and the Endowment for Health.
