UNH admits that buying $17,570 light-up table was a bad idea

DURHAM — The University of New Hampshire admitted that the new custom made dining hall table, that cost $17,570, was a bad idea.

"It was a mistake, and it won't happen again," UNH Media Relations Director, Erika Mantz, told the Union Leader.

Mantz gave a statement that read:

"Purchasing a custom-made chef’s table for the recently renovated Holloway Commons costing thousands of dollars should not have happened. Steps have been taken to ensure it is a mistake that won’t be repeated. The table was not purchased with bonded construction dollars but through the Hospitality Services budget.

"The university takes great pride in its long track record of fiscal responsibility and efforts to soundly steward both student tuition and taxpayer dollars. Having a chef’s table was a good idea in that it allows the dining staff to interact with students, demonstrate healthy cooking techniques and share nutrition education, but much less money should and could have been spent to achieve the same outcome."

The table was designed for the university by a Chicago based company called Seating Concepts and it’s made with reclaimed metal railings from the original HoCo and features a controllable LED lighting system, according to The New Hampshire.

The table was part of Holloway Commons' multi million dollar remodel that took place this year.

The table has a lit up top with adjustable LED lights and provides 16 seats to the largest dining hall on campus.

The LED table was funded through the dining and hospitality budget, not from the Holloway Commons project, according to Mantz.

The Holloway Commons project added 350 seats and improved the foot traffic in the dining hall. The project was completely funded through bonds from the New Hampshire Health and Education Facilities Authority.
