DURHAM — Several University of New Hampshire students stood in solidarity overnight Wednesday after a photo of what appears to be blackface was posted to an Instagram account.

Danique Montique, a sophomore at the University of New Hampshire, posted to Facebook on May 6 about her feelings regarding the "students who chose to demean and appropriate Mexican culture," on Cinco de Mayo.

The post has been shared more than 2,100 times and created heavy debate among commenters.

Montique told NH1 that she and several other students of color participated in sit-in overnight after one commenter posted to Instagram a photo of someone who appears to be in blackface. The photo was captioned with a direct quote from her post, saying "As a black woman, I was forced to become the very thing society deemed me to be; angry."

The "blackoutlamers" Instagram account that posted the photo has since been deleted.

Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon," according to Wikipedia.

Several students took to Twitter to promote the sit-in and express their disappointment with UNH for their lack of response toward the situation.

The students used the hashtags #listentodanique #the8percentspeaks in their Tweets.
