Two UNH students under arrest after 3rd student stabbed, seriously injured, early Saturday

DURHAM - Two University of New Hampshire students are under arrest after another student was stabbed, suffering serious injuries, early Saturday.

Durham police say they were called around 12:45 a.m. to Madbury Road where they found a 20-year-old man who said he'd been stabbed by an unknown assailant. They got a description of the attacker and the victim was taken to Wentworth Douglass Hospital where he underwent surgery for two stab wounds.

Police say he was listed in stable condition later Saturday morning.

Police issued an alert with a description of the subject and asked people to avoid the area where the attacker was last seen. The suspect in the attack and a second student were subsequently taken into custody.

Matthew R. Gibbon, 20, of 5 Dawn St. in Salem, was charged with first-degree assault. Eric C. Denning, 21, of Redwood Road, also in Salem, was charged with second-degree assault and criminal liability.

Both men were being held on cash bail at the Strafford County jail and are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
