Two people seriously injured in one of two crashes within a mile of each other in Derry

DERRY - Two accidents within a mile of each other sent multiple people to the hospital for serious injuries.

The first call came in around 4:30 p.m. - a head-on collision in front of Pete's Scoop Ice Cream Stand. Both cars sustained extensive damage.

Police said both drivers were severely injured and one was trapped; there were no passengers in either vehicle. Crews used the Jaws of Life to extract the trapped driver, who sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Mass. He was not wearing a seat-belt.

The driver of the other vehicle, a SUV, suffered significant injuries and also had to be cut from his vehicle. He was sent to Parkland Medical Center.

While on scene, firefighters received a second call for an accident less than a mile away on Rockingham Road. One person was transported to Parkland Medical Center with minor injuries.

The accidents were two of 14 accidents Derry firefighters responded to within 12 hours on Saturday.
