Two Manchester families evacuate after their Pearl Street home catches fire

MANCHESTER - A fire that started in an outdoor trash container set a two-family home on fire early Saturday morning and forced four adults and three children to evacuate.

The fire was discovered around 4 a.m. at 396 Pearl St. when tenants on the first floor woke to the smell of smoke. They identified the source of the fire at the rear of the house, but by this time the house itself had caught fire and smoke was filling the living areas. Everyone in the home evacuated before firefighters arrived

Firefighters said the exterior fire had consumed part of the back of the first floor and was extending to the second floor. The fire had also started to work its way inside the building before they extinguished the blaze. Residents were able to re-enter the home after about an hour.

Damage to the home was estimated at $10,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
