Two climbers rescued by Fish and Game off cliff in Franconia

FRANCONIA — Two rock climbers got lost in the dark stranded two thirds of the way up Moon Shadow Climbing Route on Cannon Cliffs, prompting a rescue by Fish and Game officials.

The climbers were identified as 29-year-old William Sprecher of Boston, Massacusetts, and 23-year-old Michael Franklin of Somerville, Massachusetts.

The pair lost track of the climbing route because of the darkness, and could not continue up or down, so they alerted Fish and Game at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

They knew that rain and snow were possibilities for early Sunday morning, and did not want to be caught in such bad weather.

Rescuers were able to climb down to the stranded climbers and assist them. The climbers were lifted to the top of the cliff as wind began to blow and rain began to fall.

The whole rescue party arrived at the trail head 10 a.m. Sunday.
