Trump sign goes up in flames in latest act of vandalism on Hollis woman's property
HOLLIS - The political season is heating up and so are some of the signs.
Darleen Bellan is a huge Trump fan, she lives on North Merrimack Road in Hollis.
She's hung up two large signs in her yard to support the presumptive Republican nominee, but recently someone has been tampering with them.
"One went missing - it was stolen," she said. "I thought whoever did that the other sign'll be fine. I don't think anyone, you know would come back a second time," Bellan said.
Early Monday morning around 1 a.m., she says she noticed someone's hazard lights flashing and when she looked out the window to check it out, she saw fire.
"Flames caught my eye," she said. "...the flames were going up and I said, 'Oh it's the Trump sign."
Her sign was on fire, she says she ran outside and noticed someone was stopped on the side of the road and found that person had called the cops.
"I assume the officer was close because he got there pretty quickly," says Lt. Joseph Hoebeke.
Hoebeke said the police officer who arrived had a fire extinguisher in his cruiser and put the fire out.
"The Hollis fire department came down and they got everything under control with the bigger equipment," Bellan said.
She said she isn't sure if it is the same person who stole her other sign and is worried if she or the other passer-by didn't spot the flames, it could have turned into something much worse.
"If we didn't have the few days of rain, as light as it was, this could have been a disaster," she said. "I mean it's all dry dead trees and leaf litter."
Neighbors across the street said they didn't see or hear anything strange, and the area is a very quiet and rural. Although Bellan has had her signs vandalized, it's not going to stop her from expressing her political views.
"It won't I put two smaller signs out that I happened to have and we will be replacing the bigger ones" she said
The fire is still under investigation, police asking anyone with information to call the Hollis Police Department.
