Trump offically nominated; NH1 News first to talk with Lewandowski after NH roll call
CLEVELAND — Donald Trump officially became the Republican presidential nominee on Tuesday evening, capping the real estate mogul and reality TV star's stunning take-over of the GOP.
Trump easily won the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination, but the traditional roll call was at times interrupted by boos as states that were won by some of Trump's rival candidates in the primaries recorded their votes.
NH1 News was on hand on the convention floor as former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who's serving as the New Hampshire delegation chairman, read the Granite State's roll call.
A few minutes later Trump was put over the top by his home state of New York. Four of his children joined the state's delegation on the convention floor for the historic moment and appeared overwhelmed with emotion.
"Congratulations, Dad. We love you," declared Donald Trump Jr.
Trump's campaign was hoping Tuesday's formal nomination of the candidate would bring an end to the divisions within the Republican Party and would shift the spotlight away from the plagiarism controversy over Monday night's address by Trump's wife Melania.
The plagiarism accusations center on two passages from Mrs. Trump's speech that closely matched the 2008 Democratic convention speech by Michelle Obama.
Earlier Tuesday, in an interview with CNN, Lewandowski criticized how Paul Manafort, the man who replaced him as Trump campaign manager, had handled oversight of the speech and suggested that he should resign.
Asked by NH1 News how his management style differs from that of Manafort, Lewandowski said "look, everybody has their own management style and mine is to be very hands on and very engaged and other people want to delegate and look, there’s nothing wrong with either of them, it’s just the way I do it."
Asked if the Melania speech controversy may not have happened if he were still running the campaign, Lewandowski told NH1 News "I don’t know man. It’s not my watch to worry about. I’m just here to help anyway I can."
