Trump criticized for not correcting questioner who said Obama is Muslim in Rochester

The Associated Press

ROCHESTER — Donald Trump's campaign manager says Trump had trouble hearing a question yesterday from a man at a town hall event in New Hampshire who incorrectly stated that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Trump has been criticized for declining to correct the questioner. Trump was a driver of the "birther" movement that claimed that Obama wasn't born in the U.S.

When the man began his question -- saying that the country has a problem with Muslims and that "we know our current president is one," Trump responded with feigned exasperation, but let the man continue.

Although his campaign manager says the room was noisy and that Trump had trouble hearing, the question could be heard clearly by several journalists sitting in the back of the gymnasium.

Republican rival Chris Christie told NBC, "If somebody at one of my town meetings said something like that, I would correct him."

And Hillary Rodham Clinton tweeted that Trump's refusal to denounce such a statement "is disturbing and just plain wrong."

Trump's campaign released a statement saying that "the media wants to make this issue about Obama" -- but that "the bigger issue is that Obama is waging a war against Christians in this country."
